New Research Study Finds Men With Hair Are Perceived as More Attractive, Successful, Younger and Approachable
The results are in – men with a full head of hair are perceived as younger, more successful, more approachable and more attractive than those without according to a new research study.
In a research study designed to determine the perception of men with vs without hair, researchers from Johns Hopkins University took 122 participants with Androgenetic Alopecia and had them rated by observers on the constructs of age, attractiveness, successfulness, and approachability both before and after hair transplant surgery.
Full details of the research can be found here , but the results resoundingly showed that on all factors a full head of hair caused the same person to be perceived as more attractive, younger, more successful and more approachable than themselves with less hair. For a long time we have known there is a link between hair loss and self-confidence and low self-esteem, but this is the first study which looks at perceptions of others.
A study published in the British Journal of Psychology in 1995 demonstrated that increasing loss of hair correlates directly with loss of self-esteem, depression, introversion, neuroticism and feeling unattractive. These effects were even more marked for young men in the case of self-esteem, introversion and feeling unattractive.
Another study published in the Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology in 2001 supports these findings, further observing that those suffering from hair loss continued to have a significant impact on life quality. This study specifically identifies the feelings of loss of self-confidence, low self-esteem and heightened self-consciousness in people affected by hair loss.
Why does this all matter you might ask? Aren’t looks only skin deep? This is very true, but this latest study highlights a couple of constructs which are meaningful, ie: success and approachability. If you are in business, these factors matter. There are many studies which show that people would rather (and in fact do) do business with others who are successful and approachable, even if you are not in a sales role. There are definite correlations between looks (hair) and wealth.
While the latest study on perceptions of others was conducted in relation to men and women who had received transplants as their hair loss treatment, the good news now is that a transplant is no longer the only option. Transplants are expensive and need to be conducted multiple times as the hair continues to thin and recede further. You can read further information on the truth about hair transplants here.
