With a last name like Nettles, I guess I was always destined to discover the only guaranteed solution for hair loss. Not that “discover” accurately describes the 25 years of research and 10 years of clinical trial and error I invested to develop and then continuously evolve the solution I created, known as Stop and reGrow.
For those who are not aware, the Nettle root contains a chemical which is claimed by herbalists to block the effects of DHT and therefore prevent the loss of hair from Androgenetic Alopecia (hereditary hair loss).
Chemical? I hear you say! Yes. In fact, most everything in nature and the world is made of Chemicals, both living and non-living matter (air, water, food, flowers, blood, hair, toothpaste/toothbrushes). There are 2,000 chemicals in our tap water, 4,000 chemicals in our blood, 11,000 chemicals in our food, 80,000 chemicals in our environment. Everything besides energy, patriotism, emotion and electricity is made of chemicals.
Anyway, back to the point of this article. Too much circulating DHT in our bodies causes hair loss. A biochemical imbalance within our bodies causes us to create more DHT than we need. The Nettles root has been shown in clinical trials to reduce DHT levels.
Whilst there have not been many studies (pharmaceutical companies tend not to be incentivized to research herbal supplements that can’t be trademarked for exclusivity and therefore large profits), there have been some which support the herbalists claim.
The American Botanical Council has conducted a number of clinical trials which demonstrated the combination of Nettles, Saw Palmetto and Pygeum were found to successfully treat BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) which could therefore be extrapolated to also prevent hair loss, given both hereditary hair loss and BPH are side effects of elevated DHT levels. Nettle root is also a popular ingredient taken orally in a couple big name hair loss products such as Provillus and Procerin.
Basically the theory behind use of the nettle root and my own Stop and Regrow solution is that a chemical imbalance in the body leads to production of too much DHT. Balancing those chemicals back to normal levels leads to thick and healthy hair and a healthy body (including prostate).
So why isn’t everyone using it you ask? Well despite claims that “all natural” herbal supplements are free from side effects, nettle root does in fact have its share of warnings. When applied topically, irritation of the scalp or an allergic reaction can occur. When taken orally, it can cause upset stomach, burning, difficulty with urination, bloating and edema. Nettle root extract should not be used in patients with heart or kidney problems due to fluid retention properties.
