In recent years, the term 'precision medicine' has made headlines in the popular press and scientific articles in academic settings. Precision medicine or personalized medicine bases its strategies for the prevention and treatment of disease on individual genetic variability, discovered by evaluating biomarkers inside your body’s blood.
In this sense, science promises that in the future, it will be possible –after a personal genetic study– to give such a specific treatment that it will only work in the person with one particular genetic configuration. This discipline has gained momentum in the United States after former President Barack Obama launched a personalized medicine initiative in 2016.
Fast forward to 2010, after 15 years of research, Dr Nettles and his research team, not only developed the “Genetic-Androgenetic-Alopecia-Test” called the Biochemical Report Card that can evaluate each enzyme affecting hair loss, it can also direct the ‘precise’ supplementation to repair the underlying genetic cause for each individual. The future is here.
.
Precision health means that your ‘treatment’, supplemented either orally or topically, will be determined solely upon the accurate measurement of each molecule in your individual blood analysis. Furthermore, Precision medicine dictates a ‘narrow’ precise range of the amounts of molecules necessary to perform your cellular functions each at an optimal Level. Precision Medicine means each ingredient is selected and purified for its exact shape and function, calibrated to your body’s molecular activity. Precision medicine is heavily affected by nutritional choices as food becomes our biochemistry, we are what we eat.
Let’s take a deeper look into “precisely’ what is Precision Medicine and how it “unlocked” the mystery of hair loss..
Modern advances in medical technology demonstrate that the underlying cause of most human “cellular” diseases or conditions are derived from imbalances on a much smaller ‘molecular’ level. While “cells” are small, visible only by micro-scopes, each cell is comprised of billions of smaller pico-sized molecules. A pico-meter is 1000 times smaller than the visible wavelength of light, measured in nano-meters.
Each cell contains 2-stranded DNA, 1 strand comes from Mom and 1 strand comes from Dad. The DNA inside each cell provide the ‘recipes’ to make the molecules inside the cell. “The ‘building’ blocks come from our choices in nutrition. We are literally what we eat,” says Dr Nettles, Chief Molecular Medical Scientist of Stop and Regrow, “but the ‘recipes’ come from our inherited genes in our DNA”
To simplify, Precision Medicine depends on the genetic analysis of the individual, found in one’s own blood analysis. Knowing that the genome's composition is a unique individual characteristic, precision medicine aims to find specific molecules to enhance the activity of other specific molecules, thus improving upon our genetic biochemistry. Epigenetics focuses on improving our genetics. With over 85% of men and 40% of women affected by genetic hair loss, Dr Nettles and epigenetics in the form of Precision Medicine will keep hair on our heads for a lifetime.
While working in Ophthalmology performing ocular retinal surgery to hone his precise surgical skills for FUE transplants, Dr Nettles explains "I saw a compound used to treat Glaucoma had the side effect of developing eyelashes longer and thicker over the course of the lash life cycle of 45 days." "AHA!, at that point, I began studying those molecules to discover the one which would viably grow hair thick and strong,"
Within his 25 year research time frame, Dr Nettles' key discovery centered around the finding of optimal ranges of various sub-types of testosterone, now termed good and bad testosterone, similar to the HDL and LDL variants of cholesterol, now so commonly known. Once the underlying biochemical cause was fully understood, Dr Nettles' team then turned to precision medicine to perfect the formula and was able to STOP hair loss and invigorate thicker hair to REGROW.
That would resolve the genetic enzyme recipe component, but what about fueling the body with the appropriate ‘building blocks’ from our food consumption? Therefore, to later pinpoint and correct all of the precise underlying factors, such as genetic and nutritional deficiencies contributing to baldness, Dr Nettles developed the Biochemical Report Card (BRC), which uses x-rays (1000X smaller than wavelengths of light) to measure the precise levels of each molecule inside our blood. With the BRC, the accurate diagnosis can be made, resulting in curing the underlying cause, thus *removing the condition from our life.
